ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Clean Energy

ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Clean Energy ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Clean Energy ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Clean EnergyThis is the fourth in a series of ASME News articles on the Societys five strategic technology focus areasrobotics, bioengineering, clean energy, manufacturing and pressure technology. This article will focus on ASMEs activities related to the topic of clean energy.Of the many technologies under consideration during the process of identifying the Societys strategic technology areas, clean energy was seen as one particular area where ASME and its products and programs could have considerable impact.Traditionally, the Society had not been especially active developing programs and products for clean energy technologies, which ASME defines as technologies that generate electric power through means that reduce or eliminate environmental emissions and impact. These technologies include renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower and energy storage technologies that capture clean energy produced at one time for use at a later time, such as battery technologies, pumped hydro, compressed air, fly wheels, thermal storage and hydrogen, as well as other zero-emission sources such as nuclear energy.During the past year, however, ASME has raised its profile in clean energy considerably by establishing three new conference programs the Offshore Wind Summit, the grenzberschreitend Offshore Wind Technical Conference and the Advanced Clean Energy Summit. The first of these, the Offshore Wind Summit program, launched last May in Houston with the successful ASME Offshore Wind Energy B2B Forum. The event, which brought together representatives from mora than 50 companies, explored the current trends and advances in the offshore wind industry a mature industry in Europe that is just beginning to gain momentum in the United States. A second event, the Offshore Wind Summit, which was held earlier this week in Boston, featured keyno te presentations as panel discussions and presentations offering focused information and lessons learned from experienced developers, asset owners and operators in the offshore wind community. This program has been more business-focused.TheInternational Offshore Wind Technical Conference (IOWTC)program, which kicked off last November in San Francisco, continues with a second event slated for this November in St. Julians, Malta. IOWTC 2019, to be held from Nov. 3-6, will feature more than 100 technical papers presented across two tracks. A scientific track will explore such topics as new fixed offshore concepts, new floating concepts, offshore turbines and modeling, structural analysis and model testing, while a project development track will address areas including permits, environmental issues, fabrication and industrialization, operations and maintenance, and offshore wind projects in Asia, Europe and the United States. A goal for the IOWTC program is to be the leader in offshore wind technology. This September, ASME will launch a third clean energy conference program, the Advanced Clean Energy Summit (ACES). The inaugural ACES event, to take place Sept. 16-17 at the Curtis Hotel in Denver, Colo., will encompass a broad spectrum of clean energy applications including solar energy, nuclear energy, advanced energy systems, oil and gas, gas turbines, wind energy, material and energy recovery, environmental systems and energy storage. The conferences theme, Evolving Into a Balanced Global Energy Portfolio, will be explored during technical sessions, workshops, discussions and panel presentations that will offer attendees the tools and information they will need to help their organizations better address clean energys challenges and opportunities.Examples of other activities related to clean energy taking place at ASME include- ASME collaborating with Clarion-PennWell media to create a Smart Energy Pavilion at the 2019 Power-Gen Conference in New Orleans this Novem ber. This Smart Energy Pavilion is expected to have up to eight content providers-sponsors bringing forward current trends and hot topics in clean energy technologies, such as smart grid, energy storage, digital energy, and block chain.- ASME Standards Certifications recent issuing of a draft standard for trial use,FE.1-2018 Rules for Construction of Fusion Energy Devices, which provides rules covering fusion-energy-related components such as vacuum vessels, cryostats and superconducting magnet structures and the interactions of these components, and related support structures- ASME Government Relations convening of the congressional briefings The Role of Nuclear Energy in U.S. Clean Energy Planning this past March and the upcomingLarge Scale Energy Storage Road to Realization featuring panelists Paul Denholm and Brian Miller from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Jason Burwen of the Energy Storage Association, and Ray Hohenstein from Fluence, a Siemens and AES company on June 18- The presentation of the three-part Offshore Wind Webinar Series,Designing an Offshore Wind Farm, in April and May 2019 and- The 2020 launch of theASMEJournal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities, the publication of the April 2019 special issue of the ASMEJournal of Solar Energy Engineeringonconcentrated solar chemistry, fuels and power, and the publication of special issues of the ASMEJournal of Energy Resources Technologyonthe ASME 2018 12th International Conference on Energy Sustainabilitythis month andpapers from the 43rd International Technical Conference on Clean Energynext month.Other products and programs related to clean energy are currently in the works at ASME as well. Dont Miss Out On Your Next Big Career Opportunity- The Muse

Dont Miss Out On Your Next Big Career Opportunity- The MuseDont Miss Out On Your Next Big Career Opportunity- The MuseMaybe you have a five-year plan, maybe youre mora the vision boarding type, or maybe theres just a specific promotion youre gunning for, but no matter how you think about the future of your career, you probably do have some idea of where youre headed next. And thats great Planning is an important step in making sure you continue to move forward. But sometimes, fantastic opportunities arent located on that plan you so clearly laid out. And by sticking to your long-term vision so closely, you dont give yourself the chance to even stumble across them. So, how can you toe the line between staying focused and driven on the path youre on while mucksmuschenstill remaining open to new routes that may pop up? Here are four ideas.1. Clear Your Head OftenTo keep an open mind, it helps to start with a clear one- uncluttered from the demands of both work and life. Its hard to spot new opportunities when youre preoccupied by an upcoming client deadline, your bosss request for more data, and your significant others birthday party complications. So make it part of your weekly schedule to do what you need to do to clear your head- whether thats by exercising, meditating, writing in a journal, or really anything that makes you feel less stressed and ready to be in the moment. Your method doesnt matter as much as your commitment to doing it. Not only is this good for your heath in general, itll make the necessary mental space for you to mull over new possibilities.2. Get Outside Your NetworkYou likely already have a solid network in your current industry- and you should definitely continue to cultivate those relationships for all the obvious reasons. But you should also develop relationships with interesting people outside your inner circle. Start with people in other departments at your company (you already have something in common)- they could help you see interest ing growth paths or potential projects at work. Attend an event in a totally different industry that youve always been curious about. Sure, it might feel awkward to be, say, the only non-salesperson at an event about sales tactics, but if youre genuinely curious and open, you may end up having really great conversations with people who are happy to talk about their own careers with you. When youre speaking with behauptung people, go deep. Remember Youre not there to find a new job, these conversations should be about different industries, upcoming projects, big ideas, and anything else you dont typically discuss in your own circles. While it may not be obvious how these people can help out your career, they may end up sharing interesting opportunities with you down the road. Or, at the very least, sparking new ideas for you to think about.Check Out Big Career Opportunities at Enterprise HoldingsOur OfficeSee Their Open Jobs At Enterprise Holdings3. Say Yes MoreWere not suggesting th at you say yes to every little thing that comes across your plate. Thats asking to get stressed out- and fast. (Not to mention, itll defeat any head clearing you do.) But start saying yes to those little ideas that come into your head and spark a little excitement in you- again, even if they dont make complete sense with your current plan. Maybe saying yes is asking your boss if you can learn a little more about a position that recently opened up in your department that youre not familiar with. Maybe its launching a book club at your office to turn your love of reading into something a little more. Maybe its finally taking that class to learn a random skill that has nothing to do with your career but youve always felt drawn to. Maybe its offering to help a friend with a side project shes working on because you care about the mission and like working with her.Whatever it is, look at your schedule and see if theres a way you can say yes more, even if its only in a small way. Doing thi s might just lead to a fun hobby or side project- but it could also lead to an opportunity you wouldnt have ever imagined. 4. Check In With Yourself- and OthersFinally, make the commitment to check in with yourself on a regular basis, to evaluate the work youre doing, as well as the work that you could be doing. Are you still happy? Challenged? Fulfilled? Are there new projects youd like to take on? New skills youd like to learn? New people youd like to meet? As you feel comfortable, it can be valuable to bring friends, mentors, or even your boss if youre close into this conversation. Talk to them about what youre learning about yourself through these exercises. Bring up any tension youre concerned about between these new insights and your original plan. Talk about your multiple passions and how youre having trouble bringing them all together into one cohesive career path. Their outside perspectives may help you find ways to bring everything together in a way that youre unable to se e. Ultimately, this all comes back to staying curious in your career. Yes, you can have a plan and be driven toward working on that, but make sure you stop sometimes to look around you and see what else is out there. The options may surprise you.

Not looking for a Job Right Now You Still Need a Personal Brand!

Not looking for a Job Right Now You mucksmuschenstill Need a Personal Brand One of the most common assumptions that people make and that we find ourselves refuting day in and day out as recruiters is the assumption that personal branding and networking are tasksyouonly need to focus on when yourelooking for a job.ur lives are busy and only getting busier between work, family, and all the myriad forms of entertainment competing for our attention. Its no surprise, then, that people treat personal branding and networking as in-between-jobs activities. With so little time on our hands, of course we only think about gussying up our resumes and LinkedIn profiles when were looking to make career moves or changing circumstances launch us on the job hunt again. The fact is, its harder to accomplish solid personal branding when youre in between jobs. While we wouldnt suggest that personal branding or networking weremore important than work or family, we do thi nk its easy to make continuously building your professional online presence a small part of your social media ritual. (Plus, its moreproductive than checking Facebook yet again today.) Its easier to find a job when youve put in the legwork and built your brand beforehand.Furthermore, having a solid personal brand on LinkedIn and other professional networks pays dividends even if youre the furthest thing from an active candidate Asolid personal brand will help your career in a number of ways that have nothing to do with looking for a job.LinkedIn Profiles Are Still the Most Valuable Personal Branding Tools for Most ProfessionalsLinkedIn faces some declining user engagement numbers, which is part of why many are hoping Microsoft will help right the ship following its relatively recent acquisition of the company. However, the network is still incredibly valuable, regardless of the challenges it facesMany people recognize that they should have a LinkedIn profile. Unfortunately, most of them make a bare-bones attempt and leave their profile almost empty for months, thinking that theyve checked off that box.But as weve written about quite a bit, those skeletal profiles can actually hurt your personal brand far more than they can help it.Here are just a few reasons why you shouldthink about building out your LinkedIn profile even if you arent looking for a job just yetStakeholders in your current job are checking your profile. Youre visible to vendors, negotiation partners, and coworkers in other departments. Astrong personal brand only helps your reputation within your current role.Your supervisors or higher-ups will take a look at your online presence when it comes to promotions. ALinkedIn profile with 15 connections, no picture, and no education or work history might send the message that youre not as committed to advancement in your career as you could be especially in customer-facing fields. If you have a great LinkedIn profile, youll show up in searches more of ten. We always bring this up in the context of hearing from recruiters, but put that aside for a moment. A great LinkedIn profile also means youre also more visible for networking and business development opportunities, possible speaking engagements, and other kinds of activities that will boost your career.A solid LinkedIn profile gives you stronger personal SEO. When someone Googles you, the first thing theyll see is a strong picture of who you are professionally. We understand that not everyone knows how to boost their personal brandor build out their LinkedIn profile. If youre finding it particularly difficult, consider reaching out to a consultant or career coach who can help.A version of this article originally appeared onthe Argentus blog.Bronwen Hann is a seasoned recruiter with 35 years of experience in the industry. When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes

When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes When Bad Writing Happens to Good Resumes Often, badeanstalt writing is a result of trying too hard to impress. When youre looking for work- especially if its been a while since your last interview- youre usually very keen to make a good first impression, but ironically, you may end up doing the opposite.Using too many adjectives may not seem like a bad thing at first. You know that youre amazing, brilliant, and talented, but getting it across in a few paragraphs of text can be challenging. However, describing yourself or your experience with too many adjectives is probably not the best way to convince a potential employer of your many great qualities.Adjectives fall into two general categories broad and specific. Broad adjectives are little better than filler they take up space without adding anything significant. Consider the difference between the following sentences which one is more convincing?A I am a fantastic, dedicated, and highly sk illed employee with an impressive work history.B I have fifteen years of experience and mastery of the four most common software tools used in the industry. Both of these sentences convey the same basic information- the writer has skills and experience- but instead of using broad adjectives to qualify those statements, the second sentence uses concrete, specific examples. Generally, if you make vague statements about your abilities paired with over-the-top adjectives, the person reading your resume will assume that youre over-inflating your worth.Another common mistake is using lazy verbs instead of action verbs. According to the folks over at The Muse, most resume bullet points begin the same way led, managed, or responsible for. They compiled a list of 185 action verbs to revitalize those tired old bullet points. Lazy verbs are often vague or boring, and they dont do a very good job of showing the reader what schrift of action you actually did. Thats why so many of these verbs need a little help from an adjective or adverb- but weve already seen how they dont solve the problem, either. To generate a personalized list of action verbs for your job search, spend some time thinking about what you did and what you accomplished at your previous position. Make a list, and then break out the thesaurus to find inspiration for more robust verbs. You can also find excellent verbs in the job postings themselves. Businesses often respond better to certain keywords- and in the case of automated software, those keywords may even be the difference between your resume ending up in front of a real person or in the trash- so dont be afraid to copy their language. While being specific is good, using corporate jargon is almost always a bad idea. George Orwell, in his essay Politics and the English Language, advocated for people to use plain, straightforward language. Unfortunately, many businesses have gone the opposite direction, using indecipherable jargon or buzzwords like syner gy or incentivize. Check out this list of corporate-speak and immediately cut any of the words that show up in your resume or cover letter.Failing to proofread is one of the worst sins you can commit in your resume or cover letter. Of course, were a little biased since Grammarlys mission is to help clean up typos and grammar mistakes, but even minor mistakes can telegraph negative traits to a potential employer. After all, if you dont pay attention to detail in such an important document, hiring managers will assume that youre careless in other areas of your professional life.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom

How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United Kingdom How a U.S. New Graduate Can Get a Job in the United KingdomBy Nathalie LotTrying to find a new job after college can be daunting in this economy. Trying to find one in aleidher country is even trickier. But sometimes we need a shake-up or a kick-start, and once we go down that road, there is no telling where we will end up.If you are contemplating hopping over the pond to have a go at living in a country with a long standing Queen, there are a few things you should know.In order for a U.S. citizen to get a U.K. work permit, you will need to have someone (usually an employer) sponsor your visa. Its bedrngnis easy and can be time consuming to get all the relevant documentation together, but once youre here, itll be worth it.As in the U.S., if you have the skills that are being cried out for, the sponsorship and visa process may go a little more smoothly and quickly in the U.K. Taking a look at theU.K. Border Agency Occupation Shortage List, we discuss some sectors that employers are looking to recruit from overseas.U.K. health and social care employers are in desperate need to fill positions. From health care assistants and nurses to brain surgeons, the health care system is straining under the pressure of being understaffed. If you are applying to be a nurse, ensure your nursing college program offers 1,500 hours of practice throughout your degree and 2,500 hours teaching time. You may cause a fuss with the U.K. Nursing and Midwifery Council when you register to practice if you dont fit the requirement. Nurses trained in the U.K. are expected to gain this level of experience before being allowed to graduate. Similar guidelines are there for doctors. The U.K. also is losing a lot of scientists and professional engineers and cant train people quick enough to replace them. If you have clinical neurophysiology, geology, oil and gas, mechanical or aer ospace engineering skills, you are desperately wanted in the U.K.Depending on the type of role for which you are applying, you may be expected to have the equivalent of an NVQ Level 3 to a degree in your chosen field. You may also be required to have experience in your industry. Its best to check what kind of companies are hiring from the States in order to see how easy it would be to gain sponsorship for a visa.Interestingly enough, there is also a shortage of chefs in the U.K. Unfortunately you cant just pop over and get a job as a commis chef. According the UKBA shortage list, to qualify for a visa, you need to have at least five years of experience in the industry and be able to go into a sous chef or head chef role. So, dodgy fast food dives do not count. As with most catering roles, companies usually ask for experience in a similar environment. Even though you have been Head Chef in your local Italian restaurant for five years, it may not be enough for the Hilton to hire you.Th e U.K. also is in need of environmental professionals, especially in the green industry, programming and software developers, and mathematics and science teachers. If you have these skills, your next step is to do your research into your specific function and to see whether its on the occupation shortage list. If it is, research what employers requirements are to work in the U.K. Maybe the job requires certain Health and Safety certificates or specific experience that you might not have due to different training systems in the U.S.If you are already working for a company that has U.K. offices, see if there are any opportunities to transfer abroad. It is slightly easier for companies to transfer current employees than it is for a U.K. company to hire someone from the U.S.If you fit all these criteria, have found a job and received your visa, its time to relax. But not for long, since you now have to organise moving to the U.K. and working your way around the utility and cable service s, figure out what your Council Tax is and whether you have to pay it.On the plus side, you get free health care Not to mention, youll be in a brand new country where new adventures await you.Nathalie Lot is a freelance journalist in London forstrike-jobs.co.uk.
